{"id":12443,"date":"2025-03-14T09:17:01","date_gmt":"2025-03-14T14:17:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/csop.cirasync.com\/?p=12443"},"modified":"2026-01-16T14:25:06","modified_gmt":"2026-01-16T20:25:06","slug":"cirasync-service-account-requirements-for-hybrid-environments","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/csop.cirasync.com\/de\/quickstart-guide\/cirasync-service-account-requirements-for-hybrid-environments\/","title":{"rendered":"CiraSync Service Account Requirements for Hybrid Environments"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This guide provides a detailed breakdown of the CiraSync Service Account Requirements for Hybrid Environments:<\/p>\n<h3><b>Hybrid Environment<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hybrid environments involve <\/span><b>synchronizing an on-prem AD with both Exchange on-prem and Office 365 mailboxes in Exchange Online<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Use Case 1: For reading an on-prem AD and syncing directly to Office 365 mailboxes<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For syncing <\/span><b>on-prem AD users<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to <\/span><b>Office 365 mailboxes<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a combination of an <\/span><b>on-prem service account and an O365 service account<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is required.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NEED SERVICE ACCOUNT CREATED WITH: With access to the on-prem AD (we will use this user to run CiraSync On-Prem services and read the on-prem AD)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Member of the \u201clocal administrator\u201d group on the server where the software will be installed<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/csop.cirasync.com\/de\/support\/preparing-windows-server\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Grant \u201clog-on as service\u201d rights on the server where the software will be installed<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mail enabled (on-prem service account needs to have a mailbox.) \u2013 will be used to store majority of the CiraSync On-Prem UCM software configuration, including licenses<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Able to receive mail from internet (for licensing)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With Application Impersonation role (needs to be assigned to this service account)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All retention policies and archiving must be disabled on this mailbox. ( this is needed for basic configuration but also this on-prem service account will be used to open targeted user mailboxes that reside in exchange on premise) this is necessary to sync to those mailboxes<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">If you are reading on-prem and need to sync to 2 mailboxes on prem and in the cloud you just need 1 service account with a mailbox with exchange on premise. And the way to make sure service can access the mailboxes that are in exchange online is with app consent that will create in CiraSync on-prem administrator<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We have two options for authenticating access to targeted user mailboxes:<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Authentication Methods:<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ol data-start=\"81\" data-end=\"160\">\n<li data-start=\"81\" data-end=\"118\"><strong data-start=\"84\" data-end=\"116\">CiraSync Application Consent<\/strong><\/li>\n<li data-start=\"119\" data-end=\"160\"><strong data-start=\"122\" data-end=\"158\">Certificate-Based Authentication<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p data-start=\"162\" data-end=\"206\">With <strong data-start=\"167\" data-end=\"203\">Certificate-Based Authentication<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"207\" data-end=\"675\">\n<li data-start=\"207\" data-end=\"319\">A certificate can be created using the <strong data-start=\"248\" data-end=\"265\">CiraSync On-Prem Admin<\/strong> tool and configured with a desired expiration date.<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"320\" data-end=\"387\"><strong data-start=\"322\" data-end=\"347\">Global Admin approval<\/strong> is required for certificate creation.<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"388\" data-end=\"546\">For a detailed overview, visit: <a href=\"https:\/\/csop.cirasync.com\/de\/support\/certificate-based-authorization-with-csop-ucm\/\" target=\"_new\" rel=\"noopener\" data-start=\"422\" data-end=\"544\">Certificate-Based Authentication Overview<\/a><\/li>\n<li data-start=\"547\" data-end=\"675\">Once the initial setup is complete, the <strong data-start=\"589\" data-end=\"618\">Application Impersonation<\/strong> role can be removed from the <strong data-start=\"648\" data-end=\"672\">O365 service account<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Use Case 2: For reading an on-prem AD and syncing directly to both Exchange on-prem and O365 mailboxes<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this scenario, targeted mailboxes exist <\/span><b>both on-prem and in Exchange Online<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4 data-start=\"73\" data-end=\"111\"><strong data-start=\"77\" data-end=\"109\">Service Account Requirements<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p data-start=\"113\" data-end=\"170\">The service account must be created with the following:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"172\" data-end=\"1102\">\n<li data-start=\"172\" data-end=\"281\"><strong data-start=\"174\" data-end=\"202\">Access to the on-prem AD<\/strong> \u2013 This account will be used to run CiraSync On-Prem services and read the on-prem AD.<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"282\" data-end=\"384\"><strong data-start=\"284\" data-end=\"330\">Member of the \u201cLocal Administrators\u201d group<\/strong> on the server where the software will be installed.<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"385\" data-end=\"489\"><strong data-start=\"387\" data-end=\"419\">&#8222;Log on as a service&#8220; rights<\/strong> must be granted on the server where the software will be installed.<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"490\" data-end=\"662\"><strong data-start=\"492\" data-end=\"508\">Mail-enabled<\/strong> (the on-prem service account must have a mailbox) \u2013 This mailbox will store the majority of the CiraSync On-Prem UCM software configuration, including licenses.<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"663\" data-end=\"735\"><strong data-start=\"665\" data-end=\"707\">Able to receive mail from the internet<\/strong> (required for licensing).<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"736\" data-end=\"816\"><strong data-start=\"738\" data-end=\"772\">Application Impersonation role<\/strong> must be assigned to this service account.<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"817\" data-end=\"1102\"><strong data-start=\"819\" data-end=\"876\">All retention policies and archiving must be disabled<\/strong> on this mailbox. This is necessary for basic configuration, as well as for enabling the on-prem service account to open targeted user mailboxes residing in Exchange on-premise, allowing synchronization with those mailboxes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Note: If you are reading from an on-prem AD and need to sync to two mailboxes\u2014one on-prem and one in the cloud\u2014you only need <strong data-start=\"192\" data-end=\"199\">one<\/strong> service account with a mailbox in <strong data-start=\"234\" data-end=\"257\">Exchange on-premise<\/strong>. To ensure that the service account can access mailboxes in <strong data-start=\"318\" data-end=\"337\">Exchange Online<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"339\" data-end=\"354\">App Consent<\/strong> must be set up in <strong data-start=\"373\" data-end=\"407\">CiraSync On-Prem Administrator<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h4 data-start=\"412\" data-end=\"482\"><strong data-start=\"416\" data-end=\"480\">Authentication Options\u00a0<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p data-start=\"484\" data-end=\"522\">We offer two authentication methods:<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"527\" data-end=\"584\"><strong data-start=\"527\" data-end=\"553\">1.
